Shelby looks like she’s ready to lose her shit when I arrive. Me? Let’s be honest, I feel amazing. I send her straight upstairs and commence playing board games with Alanna. We move on to puzzles, and by the time Shelby comes down an hour or so later, her face is much more serene.

“Hey,” she says, pulling her blond hair up into a messy bun. “Thank you again for coming over. I haven’t been sleeping well.”

“No problem,” I say brightly and place another piece of Alanna’s pirate puzzle. She has a thing for pirates now, apparently. “There you go, kiddo. I think you can finish this by yourself. I’m going to go make your mommy some tea.”

Alanna finishes her puzzle and Shelby sends her upstairs to play in her room for a little while. I make us tea and bring it to the couch. Shelby sits on one end with her legs stretched out, her hand on her belly.

“So how are you feeling?” I ask. “Or is that a stupid question?”

“No, it’s not a stupid question,” she says. “I feel like I look. Huge and uncomfortable. It’s hard to sleep, but I’ll be okay. I don’t have too much longer.”

“Is it freaking you out not to know what you’re having?” I ask. “I don’t know if I could wait.”

She shrugs. “A little. I kind of like not knowing, though. It’s like keeping a secret from myself.” She narrows her eyes at me. “Speaking of secrets, something is going on. What is it?”

I suck so bad at keeping things from my sister. I don’t even have to say a word. She always knows. I push my glasses back up my nose. “What do you mean?”

“You’ve been smiling since you got here,” she says.

“I can’t smile?”

“Sure, you can smile. But you’re smiling more than normal, and I want to know why.”

Thinking about smiling makes me think of Alex, which makes me smile more. My face warms and I can tell by the look on Shelby’s face that I’m starting to blush.

“Now you really have to tell me,” she says. “Is this about that guy? Did you see him again?”

“Alex, and yes, I definitely saw him again.”

Her eyes widen and a smile steals across her face. “You slept with him, didn’t you?”

“There was some sleeping involved. And a lot of not sleeping.”

She adjusts her grip on her tea. “Oh my god, tell me everything.”

“We went out to a nice dinner, and it was amazing. He took me home, and the power in my building was out. It was freezing. I was going to call you, but he offered to have me stay at his place.”

“Wow, that’s bold.”

“Yes, and no,” I say. “Actually, he put me up in his guest room and kind of stopped anything from happening.”

“Except there was a lot of not sleeping?”

“Yeah, that happened later,” I say. “I went to bed upset, thinking I’d totally screwed up and misread the whole situation. But he was just trying to be extra gentlemanly.
